Final countdown to Gay Ski Week

The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest gay and lesbian alpine party is on the Gaydar. Set to open in three days time, bookings indicate it’s going to be a record turnout this year.

42BELOW Gay Ski Week NZ (GSWNZ) festival organiser Mike Sanford says excitement is mounting on all corners of the globe.

“This year’s turnout is big and international. Our official venue, Crowne Plaza, is now fully booked for some festival nights and only has limited space remaining on others, so get in there quick if you’re yet to earmark your QUEEN room. Over half the hotel will be made up of GSWNZ attendees; it’s going to be fantastic.”

The event guide to the week’s on and off mountain activities is now available to download on www.gayskiweeknz.com this week.

“The DNA Magazine Lake Cruise and Dinner at Walter Peak is set to be a highlight for 2007. We’re taking over the Earnslaw and flying the rainbow flag for the evening of September 2,” says Mr Sanford.

“QUEENStown’s got Talent is also going to be a blast. It’s a Karaoke night on the Wednesday evening with special host Drag Diva Miss Ribena who comes to us direct from Family Bar in Auckland. This is the night we really want to see locals rub shoulders with our visitors and have a sing together.”

The WHITE OUT Dance Party to take place on Friday September 7 is Queenstown’s biggest gay and lesbian gig and is making its name on New Zealand’s party circuit calendar.

“We’re bringing in special guest DJs Dan Murphy from Sydney and Luke Fry from San Francisco to perform back to back during the WHITE OUT. It’s set to be a colourful night featuring laser lights we’re bringing over from Sydney. These would rarely be seen in Queenstown and will provide an amazing display.”

Mr Sanford says QUEENStown locals are more than welcome to join in the fun.

“Each year we welcome more and more local people to our events and as always, there’s plenty of entertainment on our event calendar that local people can enjoy.“

Other events to watch out for are:
• 5th Birthday Welcome Party on 1 September at Bezu restaurant and bar
• 4 ski days around the Queenstown region, including a Picnic on the Peak at Coronet Peak with pink bubbly. Skiers and boarders will be transported to and from Crowne Plaza Queenstown to the skifield of the day on the Pink Bus.
• Downhill Dash for Cash
• A saucy set of Gaylick Games at Pog Mahones Irish Pub.
• A retro dress up bowls evening
• A Central Otago wine tour
• Several après ski parties at various salubrious venues

Mr Sanford says that the support of Queenstown – the businesses, residents and family of sponsors – is key to the success of the festival.

“Our sponsors are rolling out the pink carpet. threesixty restaurant’s offering $15 cooked breakfasts to Gay Ski Week attendees whether you’re staying at Crowne Plaza or elsewhere. All you have to do is show your ski week lanyard.

“Outside Sports is offering gear hire by the day or pay 4 days and get 6 days hire. They’re fitting and delivering gear as part of the service.

“Best of all, 42Below Vodka is kicking off our 5th birthday party celebration in style at Bezu restaurant and bar with a round of vodka for everyone.”
