Respected Leader, Music Legend Are Living Legends

A respected leader and a legendary musician become Living Legends

Two extraordinary Aucklanders will receive Living Legends awards from Mayor Dick Hubbard at a ceremony this evening to acknowledge their contribution to the city of Auckland.

Sir Ron Carter is one of the most admired business leaders in Auckland and the rest of the country.

"He is truly one of Auckland's treasures," says Mayor Dick Hubbard. "Not only has he been an outstanding businessman, he continues to roll his sleeves up through his role at Committee for Auckland, a not-for-profit organisation involved in many of the city's major projects."

Mayor Hubbard says Carter's involvement extends from input into Auckland's urban design issues to nurturing future Auckland leaders to addressing social issues with the City Mission.

"His drive, passion and his commitment to make a contribution is admirable. He is an excellent ambassador for our city and our nation."

Musician Mike Chunn is also a recipient of an award.

Mike has made a huge contribution to the local music industry over the past 25 years. Mostly known for his involvement in one of New Zealand's most renowned bands, Split Enz, Mike moved on to work in senior positions in the music industry where he has worked with many of our best known artists.

He also established Play it Strange, a charitable trust that cultivates the musical and writing talent of secondary school students.

"This is a highly successful school programme which encourages our young people to celebrate life through music," says Mayor Hubbard.

"He is a legendary Aucklander and I'm delighted to honour him as a Living Legend."

Award recipients receive a certificate and a pohutukawa tree seedling at a council meeting at the Auckland Town Hall this evening (6pm on Thursday, August 23). The trees have been generously donated by Project Crimson.
