Southlanders Roll Out For Premier Teretonga Event

16% Of Southland's Population Attends Premier Teretonga Event

As another big season approaches at Teretonga Park the crowd figure for last summer's huge Mike Pero Mortgages Motorsport Series meeting featuring the New Zealand Grand Prix has been confirmed. The figures have revealed that 16% of the Southland province's population attended the event.

16,835 people attended the meeting in March, a figure which translates to approximately 16% of the population of the entire province. Meanwhile up to 160,000 viewers watched the various segments of racing from the event when screened on the weekly Powerbuilt Tools Motorsport show on TV1.

The annual Summer Series meeting which was held in perfect autumn weather featured the premier classes of New Zealand motorsport, including the New Zealand Grand Prix and the Spirit Of A Nation Cup for Toyota Racing Series cars. Also on the programme were the incredibly popular NZV8s, the Porsche GT3 Cup, the MINI Challenge, Formula Ford, Production Racing Series and NZV8s Development Series.

The weekend at the country's southernmost track was notable for the tremendous atmosphere generated by the massive crowd, with many camping at the circuit for the entire weekend and many unique structures and makeshift grandstands lining the track including a full-size house transported onto the site by truck and trailer.

A promotion by Motorsport New Zealand at the event promoting motorsport also created a huge amount of interest and a special Open Day with activities such as a Gymkhana and Clubsport activities will be held at Teretonga on Sunday 2 September for many who registered their interest with another similar event expected to follow soon after.

The huge turnout for the Teretonga Park round of the series is calculated to be the biggest crowd of the season in terms of percentage of population at any of the championship venues.
