Upstart offers kids chance to get published

Upstart offers kids the chance to get published!

Upstart Magazine, one of New Zealand's most widely read children's magazines, wants to hear from you! This is a great opportunity to get your work published and go into the draw to win great prizes!

Upstart is asking children aged 7 - 13 years from all over New Zealand to contribute to the magazine. All kinds of contributions are welcomed letters, opinion pieces, poetry, creative writing, artwork, and reviews.

Each issue is created with children's direct input. The magazine is packed full of kids' own stories. There are also interviews with celebrities and local role models, competitions to enter, as well as the latest news and reviews in the world of sport, fashion, music, gaming, books, television, movies, and heaps more!

Contributions can be made either via post to Upstart Magazine Contributions, PO Box 28088, Havelock North 4157, or email editor@upstartMAG.co.nz.

Every school subscription of Upstart comes with Upstart Teacher Link, a free 8-page resource booklet for teachers. Teacher Link is produced specifically for NZ primary and intermediate school teachers, and contains curriculum-linked work units and ideas for classroom use.

Upstart is published by Syrup Publishing Ltd, with the support of Save the Children New Zealand. Save the Children provided funding to help launch the publication in 2006 and continues to offer financial and advisory services on children's rights and protection to Upstart. Save the Children New Zealand is committed to this project, and values the opportunity for New Zealand children to participate and be heard. Save the Children New Zealand contributes information on children's rights to Upstart as a part of their commitment to development education.

Sue Reynolds, director of Syrup Publishing Ltd and editor of Upstart Magazine says the aim is to provide children in New Zealand with a strong voice in the New Zealand mainstream media.

"We want to ensure children have the opportunity to actively participate in issues that affect them and to have their opinions respected, listened to, and acted upon. Upstart provides a great opportunity for children aged 7 to 13 years to be heard."

"Upstart Magazine provides children with a platform to make some noise and be counted. We work with young contributors from all over the country to ensure they fully participate in the creation of their magazine. Seeing their words and artwork in print in a national publication is a huge motivating factor," says Sue.

Upstart Magazine is distributed via primary and intermediate schools and sold via bookstores and supermarkets nationwide. To subscribe to Upstart, phone: 0800 624 299 or email subs@upstartmag.co.nz or go to www.upstartmag.co.nz.
