New Zealand Lions Clubs Speechmaker National Finals

The national finals of the Lions Clubs Young Speechmaker contest will be held in Christchurch on Saturday 25th August, 2007,continuing a Lions tradition of 30 plus years.

Sponsored by International Entertainment NZ Ltd-a professional fund-raising company that has provided its services to Lions Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand for the past 19 years, the competition highlights the countries top young speechmaking talent.

The winner will receive a six week, all expenses paid trip to the USA and Canada where they will speak to a number of Lions Clubs about life and culture in New Zealand.

National Co-ordinator and Lion , Kerry Beach of Hamilton, is amazed at the calibre of contestants and the camaraderie which they show for each other.

‘The contest is undoubtedly the most prestigious contest in New Zealand for this age group. The talent on offer is absolutely outstanding. These young people are our future and it’s a real pleasure to involved with them,” says Beach.

Students from all over New Zealand entered regional contest held recently in each of the ten Lions Clubs districts. The 20 selected finalists (see attachment of National Finalists and sponsoring Lions Clubs) will now represent their district in the finals in Christchurch on Saturday 25 August 2007.

Open to 17-21 year olds, each entrant makes a five to six minute prepared speech and an impromptu speech of up to two minutes.

The contest will be held in the St Mark’s Presbyterian Church Complex, Withells Road, Christchurch and is open to the public from 9.15 am to 3.30pm

“We encourage the public to come along and enjoy this unique event. Entry is free and the capability of these young people is sure to impress,” said Beach.

Previous winners include Turing Merito of Rotorua, who starred in Australia’s biggest theatre production, Disney’s The Lion King, Radio Live host Siobhan Burke and Brydie O’Connor from Invercargill, who works on radio and is a reporter for TVNZ.
