Are New Zealand men ready to take their sense of fashion flair to new levels?

Iconic Wellington fashion designers Mandatory think so, today launching a new high-end range of clothing exclusively for men: the Mandatory White Label.

The launch of the Mandatory White Label range highlighted the Mandatory Turns Ten fashion and music event, held at Wellington's San Francisco Bathhouse Friday July 20.

Mandatory owner/designers Clare Bowden and Fiona Edwards said that the Mandatory White Label is aimed at the top five percent of male fashion buyers, featuring strictly limited variations of Mandatory's ranges.

"The emphasis is on men who appreciate high end style, and are not afraid to express it," said Ms Bowden. "This is an exclusive, limited edition range – hyper styled.

"In the decade we've been in business we've noticed that men want options in fashion so we're damn excited to be giving men a new level," said Ms Bowden.

Ms Edwards said the first range of Mandatory White Label fitted well with the tenth birthday celebrations, as it featured modernised reinterpretations of previous Mandatory ranges.

"Our first range for Mandatory White Label is like a remixed retrospective – if it was a music album we'd call it a 're-mastered best-of'," said Ms Edwards. "Its ongoing premise is ramped up pieces from the broader Mandatory Collections.

"Mandatory has always been strong supporters of the Wellington arts, music and culture, so this was as much a celebration of all the people who have worked with Mandatory in the past ten years as it is our birthday party. We even had some of Wellington's finest musicians and identities help us out by modelling for us."

People who modelled the White Label range included filmmaker Taika Waititi, Daimon Schwalger (The Nomad), Joe Lindsay from Fat Freddys Drop, actor Jason Whyte, DJ Kava, Kos (The Foot Souljahs) and internationally-renowned hair stylist Derek Elvy.
