30 July 2007 - Happy Birthday Rip It Up
30 years ago a young Murray Cammick had the brilliant idea to set up a new free music magazine and Rip It Up was born.
"He read out some Little Richard song titles, he said ‘Rip It Up’ and I said, or we both said ‘you can’t call a magazine that!" Murray Cammick on naming Rip It Up in June 1977
1977 was a watershed year in rock’n’roll history, the Sex Pistols recorded Never Mind The Bollocks, Hello Sailor released it’s self-titled debut album and The Commodores were on the front cover of the first ever edition of Rip It Up.
Monday July 30th sees us celebrate the first thirty years of Rip It Up, with the biggest ever edition hitting the streets. We’ve trawled the archives and added an extra 50 pages to bring you classic gig reviews, photos that we rescued from under Murray’s bed, some of our favourite interviews, letters and news.
Not only that but our award winning friends over at www.seven.co.nz have added that extra something to the look of the magazine and we think you’ll agree with us when we say it looks just like a magazine celebrating it’s birthday.
As if that’s not enough, we’ve got features on Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Pitch Black, Editors, Smashing Pumpkins, Blindspott, Eli Roth and Shihad. There’s album, gig, book, comic, film and DVD reviews and some very cool stuff to be won.
Just when you think it can’t get any better we’ve made some limited edition Rip It Up T-Shirts which you’ll want to get your hands on.
So join us in celebrating the first 30 Years of Rip It Up.
