NZ Icon collaborates with Mormon Icon
Dame Malvina Major, features with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Prime TV this Sunday 15th of July at 6.00am.
AUCKLAND July 12 2007: Dame Malvina Major, a New Zealand icon and operatic soprano, features as guest artist with the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Prime TV’s weekly broadcast of Music and The Spoken Word, this coming Sunday.
The deal came about when 31,000 Rotarians gathered in Salt Lake City for Rotary’s International worldwide Convention.
Rotary’s current worldwide President is Bill Boyd, a New Zealander so, as a result, the RI Convention featured much of
New Zealand.
Dame Malvina Major came to SLC as part of the entertainment for the Rotarians and was accompanied by Maestro Joel
Rosenberg and orchestra, and by Prof Terence Dennis, Head of Piano at Otago University.
“Of course, we had heard the choir many times on the radio, but it was really impressive to be there in person,” said
Rotarian Carl P Cardey. “The facility is huge, although we were asked to be as quiet as possible during the broadcast
and not applaud, once it was over, the whole place erupted with a standing ovation for the choir, the orchestra and
guest soloist, Dame Malvina Major.”
The Choir performed music from the Christian liturgical repertoire that is appreciated by people of all different
faiths.
The taping of the broadcast was in front of a 21,000 strong audience of Rotarians, tourists and officials representing
New Zealand including the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, Roy Ferguson and the New Zealand Consul-General,
Rob Taylor.
Music and the Spoken Word, seen all over the globe, is now in its 78th year of continuous network broadcasting and can
be seen on New Zealand’s Prime TV each Sunday Morning at 6.00am.
