Subaru expands cycle sport support

Already involved with mountain biking, Subaru has expanded its support to include road and track cycling and BMX, through Bike NZ, which is the umbrella organisation for all competitive cycling sports in New Zealand.

For several years Subaru has been involved in mountain biking and sponsored the National Mountain Biking Championships. Last year it was the vehicle supplier to the World Mountain Biking Championships held at Rotorua.

The Subaru Forester, Legacy and Outback supplied to Bike NZ are equipped with extra hazard lights and public address systems so they can be used as safety vehicles at major events throughout the country.

“With the continued growth of mountain biking, Subaru’s support is an ideal fit with our sport,” said Rodger Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of Bike NZ. “Subaru suits mountain biking’s off road – go anywhere philosophy.”

“We will also be able to support more events and extend the support to other cycling events apart from mountain biking,” said Mr. Thompson.

Greater support of all cycling sports was a logical progression for Subaru, said Chris Rickards, the General Manager of Subaru of New Zealand.

“It fits in well with our brand philosophy of an adventurous spirit, to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors.”
Subaru’s other major sporting sponsorships include rallying and skiing.

Subaru has been involved in mountain biking in North America for a number of years with the Gary Fisher pro team. It has also been the vehicle supplier to seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong’s team in all the top European pro road cycling events.
