First download-only song hits Top 20

First download-only song hits Top 20

Vodafone is delighted to announce R Kelly’s hit “Good Sex” is the first Top 20 hit sold exclusively through the Vodafone Music Store to make it into the official chart. This follows the introduction of digital music sales into the New Zealand charts in April.

The Vodafone Music Store, New Zealand’s largest seller of singles, is available to any Vodafone customer with a Vodafone Live mobile and allows customers to download music to both their mobile and to the PC. Singles cost $1.99 and full albums can be downloaded for $17.99

“This is the first time a single sold exclusively through Vodafone has made it into the Top 20 but it’s definitely a sign of the times and there will be more to follow,” says Vodafone’s head of music Morgan Donoghue.

Vodafone is thrilled with the new-look chart and the inclusion of digital sales.

“New Zealand consumers are moving quickly to the new model of downloading music rather than buying it in the shops and the new chart reflects that. This is a turning point for the whole music market in New Zealand and we look forward to a bright future for digital sales.” Donoghue added.

R Kelly’s “Good Sex” is only available for sale through Vodafone’s Music Store and has sold over 1000 copies since its launch earlier this month.

“Vodafone will continue to offer exclusive singles to customers of the Music Store as well as other innovative features in the months ahead. Legitimate digital music is taking off in New Zealand and Vodafone is playing a key part in that revolution,” says Donoghue.

PS - as of this morning, Good Sex sits at number 19 on the chart.
