Leading industry experts, captivating wine tasting, practical tips and crystal ball gazing-something to suit every palate at this year’s Wine New Zealand Seminars.
With a plethora of trade events and wine road shows available to the premier hospitality professional, Wine New Zealand, which forms part of HospitalityNZ, is truly distinctive. This event is the single largest showcase of New Zealand wines in the world! So much more than a pure sampling forum, the show includes the Wine New Zealand Seminars, an educational platform and a key exchange between winemakers, hospitality professionals; key trade and wine media, as well as a critical business format in which to develop and enhance industry relationships.
As a trade exclusive event, the extended tasting and educational platform is designed to enthuse and encourage the wine retail and premier hospitality industry to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of New Zealand wines, sample a large selection of quality wines as well as meet with the winemakers and network with industry colleagues. Entry to Wine New Zealand is $15 per day for trade qualified professionals and all visitors are invited to attend the wine seminars at no additional charge. With a top line up of speakers and sessions offering practical advice and tasting guidance from industry heavy weights, Wine New Zealand delivers value and a unique business experience.
There is a practical and dynamic seminar schedule planned for the 2007 event. The seminars will include a session entitled Wine Lists- The art of creating a Glass Act! This session will discuss what really makes a wine list stand out in a crowd and offer practical tips from industry experts regarding the art of creating a great wine list that drives business and profitability. Panellists include John Ingles, Number 5 Restaurant, Michael D’Earth, The Grove, Nick Harding, One Tree Grill (Lewisham Award Winner 2007 for Negociants Outstanding Sommelier), Chris Rupe, SPQR and Josselin de Gessincourt, Sommelier, Braçu Restaurant. Acknowledging that wine is a fashion industry and to be successful wine retailers and restaurateurs must predict future winners and losers, the wine seminars will also present a two part session entitled Into the Future, Predicting Trends in New Zealand Wine.
Spread across two days, each one hour session will together review New Zealand’s ten most important wines or wine groups. The wines under review will be Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Other Whites (Gewürztraminer, Viognier), Sparking, Sweet, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux Blends (Cabernet/Sauvignon/Merlot) and Syrah. This entertaining and at times controversial session will also reveal the “Critics Choice” of top wine producers, as selected by the country’s leading wine critics. Quality-focused retailers and restaurateurs can expect to leave this seminar with a shopping list to assist them to stay ahead of the game. Panellists include esteemed wine critics, Bob Campbell and Michael Cooper as well as established wine retailers Tracey Poole, Fine Wine Delivery Company and Liz Wheadon, Glengarry Wines, with special international guest speaker Adam Lechmere from leading UK trade publication Decanter Magazine.
There will be also be two tempting wine tasting sessions on offer at this year’s event. One session will profile The Emergence of Regional Character - Pinot Noir and Riesling presented alongside a tantalizing food match prepared by Monsoon Poon Restaurant. The second, in true anniversary style, will be a tasting session on New Zealand Sparkling & Dessert Wines which will include commentary from a panel of renowned winemakers and wine media.
To top off the anniversary celebrations, Wine New Zealand will invite visitors to nominate their choice for the winery and winemaker that enhances their overall event experience, with the Wine New Zealand Buyer’s Choice Awards. Platinum event sponsor O-I New Zealand are naming sponsor of the O-I New Zealand Buyer’s Choice Winery Award and Labels For Wine are proud to sponsor the Labels For Wine Buyer’s Choice Winemaker Award. Full details and voting forms will be included in the Wine New Zealand Catalogue distributed to all visitors at the event, and there will be a special commemorative gift hamper for two lucky trade visitors who cast their vote. Winners will be announced on the final day of the show Tuesday 4th September at 4:00p.m in the seminar area of Wine New Zealand, Hall Two, ASB Showgrounds.
