The Physics Room Welcomes Bekah Carran, Artist in Residence
The Physics Room is pleased to announce the arrival of 2007's second Artist in Residence, Dunedin-based artist Bekah
Carran.

Currently concerned with doubt stricken spiritual leaders and artists who leave it all behind to become nomadic hunter
gatherers, Carran's sculptural practice is characterised by her observations of the world around which she translates
into poetic installations that have a sense of optimism blended with meticulous use of materials.

In response to urgent world wide debate surrounding sustainability and environmental decline, Carran light-heartedly
explores small possibilities of hope by unifying the good from disparate sources and attempts to encourage discussion
about alternatives to our current reality as well as creating a sense of quiet optimism.

Amalgamating elements from spectrums of possibility – recent and archaic systems of sustainable energy production, the
contemporary nomadic jet setter, traditional nomadic hunter gatherer, the technologically savvy artist and traditional
eco artist – Carran aims to construct a confused modern mythology of the nomad.
Bekah Carran received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago School of Fine Art in 1998 and was a Blue Oyster Gallery
Trustee from 2002 to June 2006.
In 2003 she was the Olivia Spencer Bower Artist in Residence in Christchurch. Recent exhibitions include welcome home my
beautiful optimist, The Physics Room, Christchurch and Artspace, Auckland; Prospect 2004, City Gallery, Wellington;
Welcome to Paradise, Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
The 2007 Physics Room Residency has been developed in partnership with The Arts Centre, Christchurch, who generously
supports the programme by providing accommodation and studio facilities for the artist.
