Lucky Win For Devonport Keno Player

A Devonport Keno player's mistake has proved to be a lucky one - winning him two prizes of $500,000, and making him Keno's biggest-ever single prize winner, says NZ Lotteries Todd McLeay.

The Keno multi-draw player correctly matched all 10 numbers on his multi-draw ticket in Draw number 4850, at 1pm on Monday. This top prize is $500,000 but the player made a lucky mistake that doubled his winnings.

"The player bought a multi-draw ticket at my store, as he does every week," says Grant Hayward of Haywards Paper Plus in Devonport.

"But the next day, he forgot that he had already bought the ticket and went into Devonport New World and purchased another multi-draw ticket with the same numbers, says Mr Hayward.

"When he came back into my store to check his ticket this morning, he realised his lucky mistake and was quite shocked to realise that he was a millionaire," adds Grant.

The winner wishes to remain anonymous and is over the moon at becoming Keno's first millionaire.

"We're delighted for the player and it just goes to show you that the only way to win is to buy a ticket; or maybe two," says Grant.

Previously, two $500,000 Keno prizes have been won in Keno's history. The two prizes were won 10 years and 10 days apart. First in Palmerston North, on 8 February 1995 and then more recently in Kaitaia, on 18 February 2005.
