New Zealand has more bad poets per head of population than another country in the world. Comedy veteran, author and broadcaster Matt Elliott examines why, as he proves his hypothesis that poets are just comedians… with no sense of humour.

Matt Elliott returns to Katipo Café, the scene of last year’s sell-out Comedy Festival show ‘A Few of My Favourite Things’, and discusses;

- What is a poem? The difference between writing a poem and writing a joke

As a grand finale, he’ll teach the audience how to write a poem, a la New Zealand’s top selling poet of all time, Glenn Colquhoun, so that they can go away and - using his poetry-by-numbers system - become rich…and dull.

Matt Elliott has performed around the world since 1989 and was the first Kiwi comedian on the Melbourne circuit, where he lived and worked for two years in the early 90s. Author of the only history of NZ comedy – Kiwi Jokers: The Rise and Rise of New Zealand Comedy – he has also been the film columnist for Quote Unquote , written and directed university law revues, taught comedy writing with a course he devised himself, worked in television and film. In 2006/7 he had sell-out shows at the Wellington Fringe (x2) and Comedy Festivals. He currently produces and presents comedy: with matt elliott on Wellington Access Radio.
