‘The End’ is coming... home

North Shore City media release

‘The End’ is coming…home

May 4, 2007

Bruce Mason’s play The End of the Golden Weather is returning home for one show only.

Set on Takapuna Beach in the 1930s, the play tells the story of a young boy’s experiences over a summer on the shore.

North Shore City Council’s sector development officer for the arts, Sarah Dugdale, says the play is an iconic story for North Shore City and for Takapuna Beach in particular.

“This new production, with actor Stephen Lovatt playing the young Geoff Crome, gives people the opportunity to engage with the man and with the play afresh,” she says.

The End of the Golden Weather was written by leading New Zealand playwright Bruce Mason in 1951 and performed by Mason as a one-man show throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

“North Shore City’s relationship with the playwright was honoured in 1997 when Takapuna’s major arts centre was named after him.

“It is fitting that the producers have chosen to end the nationwide tour of this influential New Zealand play, here in Takapuna where it all began,” says Dr Dugdale.

The End of the Golden Weather will be performed on Sunday, June 3 at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna. For more information please visit www.brucemasoncentre.co.nz.
