How to Tread Lightly
and Live Like a Shadow. Photography: A Fanau Affair
An exhibition of photography by Greg Semu, Evotia Tamua Thompson and Eimi Tamua.
Greg Semu entered the world of photography in 1990 and his first solo show was in 1995 at the Auckland Art Gallery. Since then, his photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are now held in private and public collections in Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand.
Semu has consistently and provocatively explored issues surrounding traditional adornment, the role of the fanau and the religious colonisation of indigenous peoples in the Pacific. This series of works focuses on the people of Manukau.

Works by Donna
Campbell
Donna Campbell (Nga Puhi, Ngati Ruanui) is a weaver and multi-media artist known for her innovative contemporary work in flax. Much of her recent work explores the female form, which she describes as "sourcing the feminine in Maori art," and incorporates both found and made objects into her work.
Donna’s work implements the technology of the traditional Maori art form of raranga (weaving) to create new and innovative works that carry the mana (prestige) of weaving and speak with the voice of the urban modern Maori.
In 2006, Donna’s superb garment ‘Little Black Dress’ won the Premier Award at the Villa Maria Cult-Couture fashion event.

EXHIBITIONS – LAST

Niu Life exhibition comes to Otara!
Supported by the Pacific Island Advisory Committee, this photographic exhibition affirms the generational bond that Pacific people have with Manukau City.
Niu Life has proved to be a strong visual project; the narrative of the photographs walks viewers through the many facets of life for Pacific communities of Manukau City.
Earlier in March, the exhibition had hundreds of visitors at Mangere Arts Centre, and received excellent feedback from young and old alike. Many visitors would spend up to an hour taking in the images in the exhibition, often having quite emotional responses to the photographs, and bringing up many memories of people and places of Manukau over the years.
Although the exhibition closes on 24 March in Mangere, due to its huge popularity, it will be installed for a second showing at Fresh Gallery Otara, opening in mid-April.
