IT’S A WRAP!

The final day of the Festival of Colour finished with more sell-out performances and Festival director, Philip Tremewan was delighted with the success of the Festival.

“We’ve been riding the artistic wave for the last six days and nights and it’s been superb,” he said. “There was a huge swell of support from audiences, artists performed at their peak and we’re already planning for 2009.”

The last day kicked off with a brunch performance by Dunedin band, The Chaps, of their own particular form of folk music that got toes tapping and hands clapping with early morning lattes in the Infinity Crystal Palace.

Both the Jubilation Choir and New Zealand Army Band toured to Arrowtown and Tarras respectively with sell out performances at both while back in the Lake Wanaka Centre, legendary jazz pianist, Mike Nock thrilled the audience with one of the musical highlights of the festival.

The Central Otago Regional Choir and Orchestra took to the stage in the early afternoon, together with some of the region’s most promising young musicians, for a programme of music by New Zealand composers that included the Festival’s own anthem Taking Off with words by Brian Turner and music by Rachel Clement.

There wasn’t a spare seat in the house for the final two performances of the Festival. Pure Nock was a unique collaboration between Michael Houstoun and Mike Nock with Houstoun playing Nock’s compositions in the first half, followed by Nock improvising and playing his own distinctive compositions in the second half.

The festival finished to the passionate rhythms of Eastern European gypsy music at the hands of the highly energetic Doch. The furious tempo and beat-driven grooves got the audience to their feet, tables and chairs pushed back as another successful Festival of Colour was celebrated late into the night.
