Fine art is fine art…..right? Paintings and drawings and all that of lofty subjects with great deep and meaningfuls. Or not! At ROAR! gallery we like to push the boundaries and find out where we end up, so when the thought crossed our minds to run a comic show for artists who usually make fine art, we thought it could be a great opportunity to find out what is lurking in the underbelly of ‘proper art’.
So, we have brought together a selection of artists who we invited to explore comics as a subject, medium, favourite characters…..and we now present you with the results. We have well known characters that have been ‘remixed’ into something quite different, like Dean Cheyne’s hand felted versions of Disney cartoons, or Mark Werhli’s puppet recreations of characters from Tin Tin and Star Trek. Sitting alongside these we have comic style treatments of less than comic subjects, such as Haydn Currie’s comic novel addressing issues and experiences around depression. For this show he has recreated pages from the novel painted eerily on the ends of wee cots, like the dreams (or nightmares) which haunt those childhood sojourns.
We are also treated to a painted version of Andrea Murray’s character Belladonna as she traverses through her nocturnal world. Previously shown as three dimensional dolls encased in ancient speaker boxes, these works have created more interest, fascination and horrid curiosity than any other in recent times at ROAR! gallery. Many visitors were sorely tempted to place her as a welcome addition to their guest room, and so many fans will be delighted to have the opportunity to hang one of these dark beauties on their wall. We also hear rumours of comic books and notebook drawings along the same lines……………
There are many more stories to read and hear running along the walls in this show and taking your imagination to strange, foreign and new worlds.
Comix Remix…….to strange new worlds, and beyond!
