Royal Easter Show Art Awards Winners

The winners of New Zealand’s largest art competition, the 2007 Royal Easter Show Art Awards, were announced at a special presentation last night.

Open to artists of all ages, amateur and professional, the awards include painting, photography, ceramics/pottery, woodcraft and textile sections with thousands of dollars worth of prizes to be won.

More than 2,100 entries were received, a record for the competiton.

“Judging such a large number of entries was quite a daunting task for the team involved,” said judge, gallery owner and tutor Murray Stewart. “The overall standard of this year’s entries was very high.”

The judges were particularly impressed by newcomer William Boyd of Epsom who won best overall painting with his entry Dismantled, described as a very loose and authoritative work using beautiful colours.

All entries are on display for the duration of the Royal Easter Show, on from 5-9 April at the ASB Showgrounds, Auckland, with many works also for sale.

With the largest viewing audience of any art show in the country, tens of thousands of visitors are expected over Easter Weekend.

Presented with their awards by Mayor of Auckland Mr Dick Hubbard, the major award winners were as follows:

- Best watercolour painting in Raye Hannam Memorial Trophy, Still Life by Barbara Von Seida of Thames*

- Best overall photograph, Barry’s Abattoir, by Colin Probust of Whangarei*
