Sports Club Accreditation Programme Success
St Marys Old Girls Netball Club & Tawa Squash Club are to be accredited with achieving Bronze award in the Sport Club Accreditation Programme.
An ACC and Alcohol Advisory Council (ALAC) initiated pilot project Sports Club Accreditation Programme (SCAP) has been trialled in selected sports clubs by Sport Wellington Region.
Sport Wellington Region is one of 4 Regional Sports Trusts (RST) selected from around New Zealand to pilot the programme designed to help clubs develop healthy practices and increase their viability in the community.
The SCAP pilot addresses a range of issues including alcohol-related harm, sport-related injury, health and safety as well as violence on and off the field, how to increase membership, develop effective infrastructures, increase financial stability, improve volunteer and coaching development systems, including people with disabilities and other health issues such as sun safety and tobacco control. SCAP is a 3 tiered accreditation programme of Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Joseph Aoina, Sport Development Advisor began work on the project in August 2006 and finish the initial stages of the pilot in December 2006. Joseph says he is excited that SMOG Netball Club and Tawa Squash Club have achieved their Bronze Level of accreditation, and he is continuing to work through the remaining clubs with their action plans.
National stakeholders of the pilot have acknowledged the tremendous value already identified by increasing the capability and capacity of clubs taking part in the pilot and are currently looking at opportunities to extend the pilot both in timeframes and rolling out the project to include more sports clubs.
A presentation of the Bronze award will be made to SMOG Netball Club on 28 March at their AGM, and to Tawa Squash Club on 31 March at the opening of their newly refurbished premises.
Clubs that have achieved their Bronze accreditation will proceed to work through the Silver accreditation.
