1st NZ Band to TOP iTunes chart

1st NZ Band to TOP iTunes chart

The first New Zealand band to have achieved the position of # 1 on the itunes chart is OPSHOP with their new single "Maybe"… and they are signed to an independent label no less.

Siren Records, with distributors Capitol/EMI, are extremely proud to be a part of this momentous occasion. "Opshop are a uniquely talented band and we're thrilled to have achieved success at this level with them," said Siren's GM Tracy Magan "As our business moves into a new era of technology it's becoming more and more about great songs and great music, less about image and marketing. On little more than the merit of being a brilliant song "Maybe" has made it to number one on itunes, the top position for a top band"
.
Being the only NZ band in the Top 10 for the last few weeks Opshop are in esteemed company beating out Mika, Regina Spektor, Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé & Shakira, The Fray, Silverchair, Fall Out Boy, Justin Timberlake and Snow Patrol who share this week's iTunes Top 10 with them.

Lead singer Jason Kerrison today said "...Opshop is absolutely totally surprised at the news that we're the first NZ band to get to the number 1 position on iTunes. As you can imagine we're absolutely stoked. We'd like to thank all our fans and the people who've pimped and hustled long and hard for us. Finally we'd also like to pay homage to Steve Jobs for making this possible."

Apple launched the iTunes store in NZ last year giving New Zealanders access to local music and the same "innovative features, breakthrough pricing and seamless integration with iPod that have made iTunes the most popular music jukebox and online music store in the world."

Opshop's song "Maybe" is also # 1 on Digirama and # 2 Coketunes charts.

Music industry stalwarts are touting Opshop's much anticipated sophomore album "Second Hand Planet" as the album of 2007…in store on April 16th.
