Cats Of All Shapes And Sizes At Royal Easter Show
From the smallest to the biggest of breeds, this year's Royal Easter Cat Show has cats of all shapes and sizes.
Organised by CATZ Inc, the popular feline show and competition is part of the Royal Easter Show on from 5-9 April 2007 at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.
New to New Zealand and to the show is the Napoleon. Like the Munchkin with its short legs and coat, the Napoleon is also short-legged but features a longer coat.
Sure to draw a few curious stares, these squat little cats will appear even more so against the biggest breeds on show, the world's largest domestic cat, the Norwegian Forest Cat, and the second largest, the Maine Coone.
With many unusual breeds on show and competing, there's the Somali, a long-haired Abyssinian; a long-hair Burmese, the Tiffanie; the Selkirk Rex, nicknamed the 'cat in sheep's clothing' because of its curly coat; and the Temple Cat, a breed first developed here in New Zealand by local breeders. Also in this category are the Jungala, Snowshoe, Bengal, hairless Sphynx, Abyssinian, Exotic, Devon Rex and Scottish Fold. Old favourites such as the Siamese, Persian, Burmese and Birman also feature in the competition. So does the household moggie, which gets its own section for companion cats, judged on qualities such as health, personality and presentation.
Visitors to the cat show can watch the judging as it unfolds and learn more about specific breeds and how to care for them. This year's judges come from Australia and New Zealand. And for those with money to spend, kitten and cat products will also be on sale.
For animal lovers, the Royal Easter Show also features a host of other animal-related attractions including Farmworld with its farm animals and petting pens, A&P competitions, shearing competitions and dog trials.
Feature acts include Over the Hedge, the Looney Tunes Loot Show and the Cadbury Crème Egg Circus EGGStravaganza.
Admission is $36 for a family five, $16 an adult, $6 a child and free for under-2 yrs. Entry to all shows and attractions, excluding the carnival rides, is included in the entry price.
