Jonathan Lemalu & Malcolm Martineau To Tour in May
Jonathan Lemalu & Malcolm Martineau To Tour in May
2007
5 concerts only!
New Zealand audiences are in for a real treat in May 2007 when Dunedin-born bass baritone Jonathan Lemalu returns to New Zealand in a five centre tour. NBR presents Jonathan Lemalu and Malcolm Martineau, live in recital, in association with Chamber Music New Zealand and The NBR New Zealand Opera, with the generous support of the Deane Endowment Trust."
I am thoroughly
looking forward to getting home for the upcoming recital
tour to NZ with Malcolm Martineau. I have made a point in
my career of trying to get home at least once a year to sing
in New Zealand. It is great to see friends and family, and
seems the least I can do for a country and a people who have
given me such great support and encouragement. These days
the year is always so busy with so much travel that I feel a
great sense of relief when back on "home soil".
Jonathan Lemalu
Booked years ahead for the most prestigious European and American concert halls, and with a three year recording contract with EMI Classics, Jonathan’s talent is drawing him onto the world stage. Critics and audiences in many countries have responded warmly to his generous stage presence and intelligent interpretive ability, and felt the greatness that is still maturing and unfolding.
"Jonathan Lemalu’s voice is
glorious, his stage presence warm and masterly."

Observer (UK).

Jonathan will be touring with
pianist Malcolm Martineau, and will perform a varied
programme including a selection of lieder (classical songs
from the 18th and 19th centuries,) and operatic arias.
'Working with Malcolm has been a real highlight in my career so far. He is one of the premiere pianists and accompanists in the world, and a great friend and colleague who always inspires me to keep pushing the boundaries of my music making.'
Jonathan Lemalu
Jonathan Lemalu graduated from a Postgraduate Diploma Course in Advanced Performance on the London Royal Schools Opera Course at the Royal College of Music and was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal. He is a joint winner of the 2002 Kathleen Ferrier award and the recipient of the 2002 Royal Philharmonic Society’s Award for Young Artist of the Year.
Malcolm Martineau is recognised as one of the leading accompanists of his generation. He has worked with many of the world's greatest singers including Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Janet Baker and Bryn Terfel. Malcolm received an honorary doctorate from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2004.
The intertwining strands of poetry and music, love and loss feature in both sets of songs which comprise the first half of this recital. Fauré’s first song cycle, written in 1878, is followed by Schumann’s masterpiece of song writing, Dichterliebe. In the second half, delightful settings from the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, written especially for Jonathan, are followed by four of Roger Quilter’s much loved settings of Shakespeare. These are followed by three operatic masterpieces: Mozart’s saucy ‘Catalogue Aria’, Gremin’s ardent thoughts on love from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Verdi’s Falstaff bestrides the stage.
