Linn Lorkin - Kiwiana

Linn Lorkin - Kiwiana Press Release

Linn Lorkin is a unique singer/songwriter/chanteuse/raconteuse - equally at home singing in English or in French, but with a truly "kiwi" background as a dairy-farmer's daughter from the South Waikato.

This concert, promoted by Arts on Tour NZ with the support of Creative New Zealand, marks the release of Kiwiana, Linn's fifth solo album, a delightful marriage of pure lyrics with varied, eclectic musical styles from around the world.

From bossa nova to Cuban mambo, waltz, tango, country, '40s swing and '50s ching-ching-ching, this album showcases 12 Lorkin originals in a fun, upbeat and accessible way.

"Like most pop albums, it is a collection of love songs", she says, but adds, “they are love songs to my native land". ’Family At The Beach’, the final track on Kiwiana has been digitally remastered from the original vinyl, as recorded with the NZSO in 1986, and recently voted Best Kiwi Summer Song in a 2007 National Radio listeners' poll.

If the perennial popularity of ‘Family at the Beach’ throughout New Zealand is anything to go by, this new show will be a must-see for any arts calendar!

Accompanied by New Yorker Hershal on accordion and former Van Morrison backing vocalist Anna Rugis, Linn Lorkin, “the girl from Tokoroa”, will swing out from the piano a full programme of all her songs about New Zealand, with a lot of new ditties and some recut and repolished older gems. Founder member of French Toast and The Jews Brothers, Linn of Grey Lynn will surely sparkle with a colourful mix of nostalgia, story-telling and great song-writing.

Come join her “family at the beach” and doing the “Family Picnic Samba”, and celebrate the beauty of this land, its rural and small-town charm and some of its hard-case characters. A unique outing to the heartland of New Zealand, hosted by Waimakariri Zonta Club Christchurch.

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 7:30pm-9:30pm
The Heritage Chapel, Music Centre of Christchurch, 140 Barbadoes Street.
