Scouts welcome Hon. Michael Baden-Powell to Awards ceremony

The Hon. Michael Baden-Powell, grandson of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting Movement, will be a special
guest at the Scouting Awards ceremony in Invercargill tonight.
The Awards evening marks the start of a weekend of Scouting activity in Invercargill and follows on from the highly
successful National Mudslide Day which involved over 10,000 young people nationwide. Awards being presented at a gala
event this evening include the Scouting Medal of Merit and the Chief Scout’s Commendation which recognise outstanding
leadership and loyalty.
Scouting CEO Geoff Knighton comments that, “Events such as the National Mudslides, the National Schools and an almost
endless list of activities which involve literally thousands of people take a great deal of organisation. It is to the
great credit of those Scout leaders, parents and volunteers that these events are safe, challenging and a lot of fun. It
is this sort of professional leadership, logistical control and loyalty which is being recognised and rewarded in
Invercargill this evening and we are proud to congratulate the recipients of each award.”
This year marks the 100th year of the Scouting Movement and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lord Robert
Baden-Powell. Southland is strongly represented in Scouting membership and the region has welcomed the range of new
programmes which have been adopted nationally.
