Drag out the bobby socks and Brylcream – the Shake, Rattle & Roll concert is about to hit Lower Hutt.
The relaxed venue of Riddiford Gardens will come alive in an afternoon full of music as the Shake, Rattle & Roll concert presents the very best of a decade where rock ‘n’ roll, bodgies and widgies, teddy boys, mods and rockers ruled! DJ Phil Costello from Classic Hits will be MC, guaranteeing a fun show for the whole family.
Avidiva kick off the afternoon with a fabulous tribute to the girl groups and female singers of the 1950’s & 60’s. Avidiva feature Jennifer Hamilton, Hayley Stewart and Kelly Fisher and have played various events and venues including the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival and Toast Martinborough.
There is also a special tribute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with Brian Childs as Elvis at his hip-gyrating best. Brian has an enormous following throughout the country and won the search for the Best Elvis Impersonator in Australasia in 1995.
“I find the show never stops being popular – with all ages” he says. “Elvis was that kind of guy – a great voice and a big personality, and the music is so familiar to everyone.”
Brian especially encourages women to attend as he has special scarves to give-away during his performance.
Headlining Shake, Rattle & Roll is the popular Wellington act Ricky Boyd and the Boomshack Band.
Following their successful seasons at Bar Bodega and playing to packed audiences at the at the Botanic Gardens, the Big Bang at the NewDowse and most recently the Cuba Street Carnival, Ricky Boyd and the Boomshack Band are raring to go.
Playing authentic 50s rhythm and blues, the all-star line-up has been a draw card in itself. Included are vocalist Jeremy Taylor (ex-Cinematic), guitarist Matthew Armitage (Odessa), experienced jazz and session bassist Dan Fulton, saxophonist Chris Petrie and bandleader and drummer Ricky Boyd.
The bands repertoire includes old-time classics from Ray Charles to Carl Perkins.
Boyd says the band is keen breathe fresh life in the ideals of the 50s. "We let the songs do the talking - we don't rely on guitar pedals, loud amps, trends and fashion but instead rely on tone, musicality and passion".
As the Shake, Rattle and Roll takes shape, concert goers are encouraged to transform Riddiford Gardens back in time by arriving dressed in fabulous fifties clothing.
Best dressed prizes are up for grabs so wear your best fifties outfit, pack a picnic and join in the fun at Riddiford Gardens, Queens Drive, Lower Hutt between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday 11 March. If wet, the concert is cancelled.
