The Road To #1
The road to #1 has been a journey just shy of three months for Mission Concert star Eric Clapton and collaborator JJ (Jean Jacques) Cale as they leap seven places to knock ABBA’s Number Ones from the top slot this week.
Both performers have had #1 singles: JJ’s Cocaine in 1976 and Slowhand’s I Shot The Sheriff in ‘74 and Tears In Heaven in 1992.
The Road To Escondido becomes Clapton’s second stay at #1 on the Albums list, the first being 1992’s 15-week #1 Unplugged, and is Cale’s very first pole positioned album here. His closest was previously the 1976 LP Troubador which stopped at #2. In fact, The Road is his first chart set in nine years and his 6th in all.
As for EC, he’s racked up 25 hit albums here since his first appearance with 1975’s There’s One In Every Crowd.

The New Singles
#20 PNC - PNWhoa!
Last week Fielding’s Evermore were #1 in Australia, this week fellow Fieldingite Sam Hansen claims his second Top 40 single as PNWhoa! takes highest new entry honours at #20. Palmerston North City (aka PNC)’s Just Roll stopped short of the top 10, peaking at #11 first time out last year. Both cuts are pulled from the debut Rookie Card (#30 last October).

#29 Jamelia - Beware Of The Dog
Twenty-six-year old Brummie Jamelia is a January kind of girl. She was born on January 11 and three years back her first New Zealand hit, Superstar, debuted here, going on to top the list and charting for just under half a year. Now in January 2007 she gains her third hit single with Beware Of The Dog, new at #29.

#35 U2 - Window In The Skies
More than 60,000 Kiwis already own the song new to the Singles list at #21 this week (it being one of two new songs featuring on U2’s former #1 album 18 Singles, currently #7 on the Albums Chart). Window In The Skies becomes the Irish foursome’s 34th New Zealand hit single. It follows the #4 The Saints Are Coming with Green Day, which remains at #33 this week.

The New Albums
#4 The Fray - How To Save A Life
The Fray played here late last year as part of a whistle-stop promo tour on the back of their first hit single Over My Head (Cable Car) (#25). Now the double Grammy nominees make their mark on the Albums Chart with their debut album, helped by the success of their second hit, also titled How To Save A Life, which has appeared on Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs lately.

#15 POD - Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years
Six-time Grammy nominated POD (Payable On Death) announced their departure from Atlantic Records in August last year and now their last set for the label becomes their fifth NZ charting album. Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years is new at #15 and features their only charting single here, 2001’s #42 Alive. Their first set to chart here was 2000’s #32 The Fundamental Elements Of Southtown, their biggest being 2002’s #4 Satellite.

#21 The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
American band The Shins are led by singer/songwriter/guitarist James Mercer and their third album becomes their New Zealand chart debut as Wincing The Night Away enters at #21 this week . The band head out on a US tour in February.

#37 Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Don’t You Fake It
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hail from Florida and place their debut release Don’t You Fake It straight in the Albums list at #37. The group are Ronnie Winter, Duke Kitchen, Elias Reidy, Joey Westwood and Jon Wilkes.

#39 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Twenty-three-year-old North Londoner Amy Jade Winehouse’s sophomore and recent UK #1 set Back To Black becomes her first chart set in Godzone, new at #39 this week. Her debut was 2003’s Frank which didn’t chart here.
