WAITANGI 2007: KOTAHI TE RA – 12.00 PM

Maori Television’s unprecedented all-day
coverage of New Zealand’s national day to commemorate the
signing of this country’s founding document in 1840. News,
views, interviews, discussions, documentaries, entertainment
and historical highlights presented by Julian Wilcox live
from Waitangi with support from Tainui Stephens and Kerre
Woodham in Auckland, and roving reporters Glen Osborne and
Mike King.
MADE FROM NEW ZEALAND – 2.00 PM
Wena
Harawira begins her live coverage of the creation of a giant
silver fern sand sculpture on Santa Monica beach in Los
Angeles. The massive icon is being built by Mike Mizrahi and
his team from Inside Out Productions to launch Made From New
Zealand – a new brand representing New Zealand ideas,
creativity and entrepreneurship.
TE WAIPOUNAMU ON WAITANGI
– 3.00 PM
A half-hour documentary about the
relationship one tribe, Ngai Tahu, has with the Treaty of
Waitangi. A mixture of kaumatua interviews and korero as
well as archival pieces set against the majestic scenery of
the South Island, this is their opportunity to talk about
what the treaty that was signed so many miles away and so
long ago means to them.
WAKA AT WAITANGI – 4.00 PM
Award-winning director Paula Jones talks to Hekenukumai
(Hector) Busby and Wiremu Wiremu about the new ceremonial
waka, Hinemoana, to be launched at Waitangi for the 2007
commemorations as well as the relationship these men have
with the waka at Waitangi. A renowned waka builder,
Hekenukumai is recognised across the Pacific as a leader of
the revival of ocean voyaging and navigation using
traditional canoes and methods.
WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? –
6.00 PM
A half-hour documentary looking at Mother England
in the 1840s from an indigenous viewpoint. Presented by
Maori lawyer Titus Rahiri, interviewees include Dr John
Darwin, a historian of European Imperialism, and Glenn
Goldsmith (Ngati Porou), a Princeton University
undergraduate and Oxford University Rhodes Scholar.

Reporters from Maori Television’s Maori
language news programme present a special half-hour wrap-up
of key Waitangi Day events at home and abroad.

Maori Television presents the premiere
of a documentary by veteran filmmaker Don Selwyn that looks
at issues surrounding the Waitangi Tribunal claim and
settlement by Bay of Plenty iwi, Te Arawa.

In this riveting reo
Maori debate show with a Waitangi Day twist, two teams of
quick-witted speakers face off and the winner is decided by
a panel of expert judges – Makere Kaa, Wiha Raki-Hawea and
Te Kepa Stirling. Presented by Te Kauhoe Wano, it’s fully
subtitled so everyone can keep up with the word
play.
NGAHAU –WAITANGI DAY CONCERT – 10.00
PM
Highlights from Manukau’s 10th Waitangi Day Family
Celebration held earlier today – a major multi-cultural
festival expected to attract 30,000 people. Presented by
Whakaangi Rongonui and Kimo Houltham and including
performances from Ardijah and Tohu as well as cultural and
dance groups.
