Entry opens today for the iconic Routeburn Classic adventure run in Queenstown, New Zealand. The event is confirmed to take place on Saturday 12 May 2007.
Set to be the fourth Routeburn Classic, the alpine race has generated worldwide interest and has immense appeal to both domestic and international athletes.
During the 38km alpine run, competitors travel over the famous Routeburn Track covering narrow paths up mountains, descents alongside forests, waterfalls and over rivers.
Routeburn Classic event director Evan McWhirter said he’s all fired up about opening entries and expects places for the popular race to fill quickly, with the number of competitors limited to 225 in line with safety requirements and DOC concession.
“The demand has been huge for the 2007 event, with many people registering on our mailing list for notification when entries open. I’m more than happy to respond to that by opening the race up to domestic and international athletes earlier this year,” said McWhirter.
“We had a fantastic event last year with some outstanding performances and strong competition between all the athletes in some very challenging conditions. With the event being in May, and climbing into an alpine environment on New Zealand’s West Coast, you never know what conditions you may face on the track from year to year.
“What I am sure of is that the Routeburn Classic is going to more than live up to the reputation for personal challenge, excitement and enjoyment, with some great new aspects being introduced to the race.
“The Classic takes places in such an amazing setting that it’s become one of the must do events for passionate adventure runners. Be prepared for a few celebrity runners this year too,” said McWhirter.
Entry is via www.goodtimesevents.net and costs $105 per person.
Entries received after 15 April 2007 will incur a late entry fee. Entries close on the 8 May 2007 or after a waiting list of more than 250 people has been established. The Routeburn Classic regional sponsors include Outside Sports, Real Journeys, Heliworks, Luxmore Hotel, Skyline, Venture Southland and Heritage Queenstown.
A reserve wet weather day has been set for Sunday 13 May 2007.
