Skycity Auckland Celebrates Nation’s Largest Party This New Year’s Eve

Join what is likely to be the nation’s largest celebration this New Year’s Eve at SKYCITY Auckland which will be transformed into “The Enchanted City,” where live entertainment, magical characters, and spectacular lighting and theming across the complex, will create a truly out-of-this world experience.

At the stroke of midnight, people all over Auckland will be treated to a spectacular display as fireworks light up the night sky for five minutes off the tip of Sky Tower. The fireworks will culminate in eight huge blasts at the end – a symbol of luck and prosperity to welcome in the New Year.

Once again, there is no entrance fee for people celebrating New Year’s Eve at SKYCITY.

Inside SKYCITY’s 18 bars, restaurants, gaming areas and the Sky Tower, an estimated 40,000 revellers will experience non-stop entertainment in SKYCITY’s audio-visual ‘Enchanted City’ wonderland.

The entertainment gets underway from 8pm on 31 December. Guests will be greeted as they arrive into the ice cave (SKYCITY’s main entrance) by an array of costumed performers (many costumes are from the World of Wearable Arts) such as a mermaid, within the giant waterfall. An “ice king” will play a haunting welcome melody on his soprano saxophone as snow-flakes drift down from the high cave-top ceiling. Roving around the main entrance will be unusual hybrid creatures known as “kennelpigs” and a “cantilerper.” Throughout the complex will be a range of colourful roving characters including gargoyles and stilt walkers through to well known characters such as the Queen of Hearts and the hunchback of Notre Dame.

A top line up of Djs, live bands and roving entertainers throughout SKYCITY’s gaming areas and bars will ensure there’s something for everyone throughout the night and well into the next day (through till 5am 1 January 2006). Live performances include The Nairobi Trio (popular jazz trio), Superhighway (one of New Zealand’s top stage bands), Vaimatu String Band (Pacific music at it’s best) and many more – offering the full complement of live performance and music from jazz, rock and groove through to soul, pop and dance.

The latest dance beats will be offered by two of Auckland’s finest DJs - Grant Marshall and General Lee in Bar3.

Diners in many of SKYCITY’s restaurants will also be treated to a variety of New Year’s Eve entertainment as well as special menus for the occasion.

Federal Street will once again be closed from 7pm on Friday 31 December until 1am to assist with traffic flow through the central city.

SKYCITY will offer New Year’s Eve guests a special car parking rate of $20 for the night to cover parking from 6pm on 31 December through to 6am on 1 January 2007. Customers can prepay for their parking on arrival if they wish.

Please note:

SKYCITY’s gaming areas and bars are all R20 for New Year’s Eve from 7pm on 31 December and staff will be checking ID.

Children may dine in restaurants if accompanied by adults but advance bookings are recommended for family seatings.

Entrance to SKYCITY from 7pm will be via the main entrance only.

SKYCITY Auckland provides free live entertainment nearly every day of the year. New Year’s Eve will provide a host of top entertainment throughout the property to cater for everyone.
