The Trusts Stadium, Waitakere ready to host World Netball Championships…
The Trusts Stadium is set to host the World Netball Championships having just recently successfully hosted the National
Netball Championships and international netball test matches to sell out crowds this year.
“The Silver Ferns haven’t lost a match here yet says the Stadium’s Chief Executive Simon Wickham “”We’d love nothing
more than hosting them again on home turf as they take on the World. It is a purpose built facility for sporting events
and this is precisely what the Trustees and designers had in mind when the project began".
The Trusts Stadium is New Zealand’s only full Olympic standard floor 6 court netball venue and has played host to many
international sporting events since opening including the Commonwealth Judo Championships, Oceania Basketball
Competition, netball and basketball test matches and plans are underway to host the World Junior Badminton Championships
in the near future.
The Trusts Stadium Chief Executive Simon Wickham says Waitakere City is excited by the prospect of hosting the World
Championships and discussions with the City’s leaders have begun. “The Stadium has met with Mayor, Bob Harvey and senior
management of the Council and they are fully in support of Championships, it would be a great coup for the City and the
wider Auckland region”.
With Auckland being the major international gateway and a culturally diverse region it is expected that a strong bid
could be coordinated for Waitakere City to host the Championships and the venue is guaranteed available and ready for
July.
“When we first heard of the possibility of IFNA moving the event from Fiji we placed some holds on dates for the same
period in July. If Netball New Zealand were keen we’d certainly be ready to host it in July next year” says Wickham.
The Trusts Stadium was Metro Magazines pick for best Stadium of the year 2006 and has won a host of awards for design
and function since opening.
