Let The Festivities Begin
It’s December and that
means Christmas. Two festive hits join the Singles Chart
just to freshen up the caroling this week. However, both
are remakes and very definitely aimed at the younger
market.
Locals The Wobbles return their Snoopy’s
Christmas to #7, 11 months and 3 weeks since it last graced
the survey for a solitary week. The group hail from the
Garden City and comprise Melly, Widdle, Aaron, Sammy (the
dog) and Crazy Wobble.
The original hit #1 on the NZ Top
20 in December 1967 for the Royal Guardsmen. Also new in
this week, German amphibian ringtone inspired music returns
to the Singles list for a fifth time. It’s that Crazy
Frog again, this time with a remake of Wham!’s 1985 #17
Last Christmas.
And indeed the Frog had last year’s
Christmas #1 with Jingle Bells, following on from the other
chart-toppers Axel F and Popcorn. Will it hop to the top
this time as well? Santa only knows.
Stage Set
For Brook
Naenae-raised, Sydney-based Brooke
Fraser’s sophomore album Albertine hit shops the day
before yesterday, set for a strong debut on next week’s
chart.
Meanwhile the set’s lead single Deciphering Me
becomes the most played song on the radio this week, moving
to the top of the RadioScope100, and inches up another spot
to #4 on the Singles Chart.
Brooke has the distinction of
having had more Airplay #1s than any other local act,
Deciphering Me bringing her tally to five. The first four
came from her seven-times platinum debut What To Do With
Daylight (Arithmetic, Saving The World, Lifeline and
Better).
Should Brooke’s Albertine come out on top next
week, it will be the 60th Kiwi #1 Album since the Official
Charts began in 1975.
The New Singles
#12
Vanessa Hudgens - Come Back To Me
First High School
Musical, then the solo world for Vanessa Hudgens as she
takes out highest new entry honours at #12 with her debut
solo hit Come Back To Me. As Gabriella in HSM she’s at
#17 with We’re All In This Together, the follow up to the
#4 We Belong Together. The former #1 soundtrack sits at #8,
while Vanessa’s V debut got to #35 a few weeks back.
#16 Rihanna - We Ride
Rihanna is the middle name of
Barbadian Robyn Fenty, who racks up her fifth hit in two
years with the third song lifted from her sophomore set A
Girl Like Me. We Ride is new at #16 and follows her #1
debut Pon De Replay, If It’s Lovin’ That You Want (#9),
SOS (Rescue Me) and Unfaithful (both #4).
#30
Omarion - Entourage
Entourage gives Omarion his third New
Zealand hit with the lead single from his 21 sophomore set,
due early next year. O was the title of both the debut
single and album for the 22-year-old former B2K lead singer
Omari Ishmael Grandberry. O peaked at #14, while his
collaboration with Bow Wow, Let Me Hold You, got to #8.
#34 Crazy Frog - Last Christmas
See story above.
The New Albums
#3 Il Divo - Siempre
The
week’s highest Albums new entry by classical boy band Il
Divo is their third Top 10 album in just 22 months. It
follows their self-titled debut’s #3 placing and the #1
Ancora from a year ago. The group put together by Pop Idol
creator Englishman Simon Cowell have another set waiting in
the wings, as their seasonal The Christmas Collection sits
at #2 on the Heatseekers Chart this week.
#6 Incubus
- Light Grenades
Californians Jose Antonio Pasillas II,
Brandon Boyd, DJ Lyfe, Mike Einziger and Ben Kenney are
Incubus. And they gain their fourth NZ Chart album this
week with their sixth studio set. Light Grenades, featuring
lead cut Anna Molly, is new at #6 and follows their February
2004 #1 A Crow Left Of The Murder. The group’s New
Zealand Chart career began with 2000’s #35 Make Yourself,
the follow-up Morning View becoming their first Top 10 set
here. The group begins a world tour early in the New Year -
no word on local dates yet though.
