Massed Voices Join in One-Off Christmas Concert
It’s one of the biggest massed youth choirs in the country, and it will perform in Auckland for a ‘one off’ special
Christmas concert on 1 December.
The ‘Celebration of Youth’ combines the Auckland Youth Choir, Auckland Boys’ Choir, the Auckland Girls’ Choir and the
Aotea Youth Symphony in a "Celebration of Youth at Christmas" concert at Holy Trinity Cathedral - 165 young singers and
musicians.
Young people from 5 to 30 years will sing sacred and secular music for the 1 ½ hour long, evening’s entertainment.
Family favourites such as “Silent Night”, “Joy to the World” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” will feature.
The concert is becoming an annual event, and each year it grows in size and popularity. This year, for the first time,
concert organisers have chosen the Holy Trinity Cathedral in order to accommodate the swelling numbers of concert goers
– over 500 are expected.
“This will be an amazing experience – both for the audience and the young people performing,” says Leonie Lawson,
Director of Music of the Auckland Girls’ Choir. “It gives youth, many of whom will progress into full time music
careers, a chance to perform on a scale seldom realised. We do this concert annually. And every year these youngsters
gain in confidence and professional experience through this one event. It’s an entrée into a much higher level of
musical poise.”
A Christmas tree will be erected by the Choir at the Concert, and children of families attending are encouraged to bring
a gift to place under the tree instead of paying an entry fee. The Anglican Trust for Women and Children and KidzFirst
Children’s Hospital will benefit.
“It’s a concert for the whole family. You’ll even get a chance to join in the singing for some of the numbers!” says
Leonie.
Organ Scholar at the Cathedral, Eugene Lavery will support the concert.
Time: Friday, 1 December, 7.30pm
Place: Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell
Cost: Adults: $15; Seniors/Students: $10
Children 0-12 years: free – encouraged to bring a gift for
the Christmas tree.
