Ricky Boyd and the Boomshack hear the call 1/11/2006
After their successful residency at Bar Bodega last summer, Ricky Boyd and the Boomshack Band are back for more.
Playing authentic fifties rhythm and blues and rock’n’roll, the All-Star line up has been a draw-card in itself. Included are returning vocalists Connan Hosford (from the Mockasins), Samuel Flynn Scott (from The Phoenix Foundation), Jeremy Taylor (ex-Cinematic), and new addition Lisa Tomlins (who has lent her voice to Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Rhombus and Shapeshifter).
The rhythm section features stalwarts’ drummer and Bandleader Ricky Boyd (ex-Accelerants), Matthew Armitage (odessa) experienced jazz and session bassist Dan Fulton, and saxophonist Chris Petrie, along with new pianist Jeremy Cullen.
The first season came about after Ricky and his friends were talking about playing a gig together. “We all wanted to play together,” says Ricky “but we were all in original bands and couldn’t give the project enough time. We came up with the idea of doing a residency, like the bands of the 50’s and 60’s we admire”.
This meant they could all focus their energies and play together, and share it with an audience.
After the success of the first season the band are raring to get back into it. “Some of the rhythm section are coming back to NZ shores in December, and we’ve upgraded the band, which now has a four piece horn section and both guy and girl vocal groups, we all can’t wait to unleash it!”
This year to keep things fresh the band are going back further in time, replacing some of the sixties tunes with R’n’B fifties tunes.
Ricky says; “It’s going to sound fantastic, as there are so many untapped songs from that era”.
Ricky believes that the values and ethics of this generation of musicians is different, and he’s keen for the band to live and breathe the ideals of the fifties; “We want to let the songs do the talking -†we don’t rely on guitar pedals, loud amps, trends and fashion but instead we’ll rely on tone, musicality and passion. Hopefully we’ll get it right”.
If last summers shows were anything to go by, this year’s performances will be something special.
