NZSO Visits The West Coast With Two Heartthrobs
The NZSO Visits The West Coast With Two Musical Heartthrobs!
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will be coming to the central south island later this month as the orchestra introduces young American conductor, Edwin Outwater and the NZSO's own pin-up; Concertmaster - Vesa-Matti Leppanen as soloist during an exclusive tour which sees the orchestra back in Greymouth after more than 18 years and making their debut in Kaikoura. They also make return visits to Westport, Nelson and Blenheim as part of the tour.
The NZSO continues its long tradition of touring to cities and towns around New Zealand. For this Lion Foundation Mainland Tour, the orchestra splits to form two smaller touring orchestras of approximately 42 players each.
"The orchestra really enjoys traveling to the regional towns; the halls are often smaller than in the main cities so it results in a more intimate connection with the audience." says Vesa-Matti Leppanen NZSO Concertmaster and soloist for this tour. "It is especially great to visit towns that the orchestra has never performed in before; it is very special to be involved in music history in the town!"
The programme opens with the overture to Mozart's popular opera The Marriage of Figaro. NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen is the soloist for Mozart's beautiful A major Violin Concerto. An interlude of fun follows with Aaron Copland's Music for the Theatre, and the programme concludes with Haydn's last, and arguably his greatest, symphony, written for his second visit to London.
>From 2001-2006 Edwin Outwater was Resident Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and has appeared as guest conductor with orchestras all over the United States including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, Houston, Seattle, Colarado and San Diego symphonies. He made his Australasian debut with the Adelaide Symphony and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra in 2005.
Before joining the San Francisco Symphony, Mr. Outwater served as Resident Conductor and Associate Guest Conductor of the Florida Philharmonic.
A native of Santa Monica, California, Edwin Outwater didn't set out to become a heartthrob, it just sort of turned out that way. A serious musician, Outwater youthful good looks has seen him targeted by orchestral marketing! He is also an avid collector of comic books, enjoys Italian horror films and surfing.

LION FOUNDATION HEARTLAND TOUR November
Mozart and Haydn were two giants of what is commonly called the first Viennese School, while Schoneberg was the leader of the second. Mozart is represented by his effervescent overture and the beautiful A major violin concerto, Haydn by his last (and arguably, greatest symphony (written for his second visit to London), and Schoenberg by an emotionally turbulent chamber symphony.
