New Zealand’s 6-member barista team, the Huhtamaki Black Cups, are now set to take on the Australian Baristaroos on October 30 in Sydney in the first “test” for the world’s richest barista prize.
The final “test” will then take place in New Zealand’s biggest-ever coffee festival, the Wild Bean Café New Zealand Coffee Festival & Awards in Auckland from November 10-12 at North Harbour Stadium.
“The team has been in intensive training in both Christchurch and Auckland and it’s very confident they can win both the Trans-Tasman Cup for the team event, and also the individual event for the world’s richest barista prize of $7,000,” says Michael Guy, the director of the New Zealand Coffee Festival.
The team travels to Australia for the first face-off at Australia’s Café Biz show in Sydney on October 30.
The team members include current NZ barista champion Luciano Marcolino of Christchurch, former barista champions Carl Sara of Christchurch and Emma Markland-Webster (Team captain) of Nelson, Ben Simcox of Napier, plus Auckland baristas David Huang and Ben Boyle, both finalists in this year’s National Barista Awards.
Around 7,000 coffee lovers are expected to converge on North Harbour Stadium for this year’s 3rd such festival.
The festival, aimed at coffee lovers, café goers and coffee professionals, will feature a number of New Zealand’s best coffee roasters and everything for the modern coffee lover and café owner, the finals of the National Barista Awards sponsored by Robert Harris which chooses a winner to compete in the World Barista Championships in Japan next year, the Trans-Tasman Barista Championships, and the judging of freshly roasted coffees for the New Zealand Coffee Awards.
