Groundbreaking artist Daniel Malone
MEDIA RELEASE - 17 October 2006
Don’t miss the latest performance by groundbreaking artist Daniel Malone at Auckland Art Gallery this Sunday at 1pm.
Floor Piece is one of a series of performances in the exhibition 5 4 3 2 1: Auckland Artist Projects, in which local artists respond to the gallery and its collections in the countdown to a landmark $90 million development.
This will be Malone's second performance at Auckland Art Gallery. In Blow Up 1996, he removed panels from a gallery bathroom wall to reveal work he’d secretly been installing in the cavity over the previous six months.
Malone will again engage with the architecture, working with the iconic tiled floor recognisable from images of countless shows since the 1970s.
The performance will continue Malone’s engagement with both physical and metaphorical structures of value and power that have seen him float a car on earthenware toilet rolls, install a long drop in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and create a Maori carving from wood from the felled One Tree Hill pine.
