ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE
The Anti-Nowhere League erupted onto the British music scene in 1980.>From the very beginning, they were the nastiest, smelliest, ugliest, most brutish British punk band of all time.
Animal (vocalist Nick Culmer, who wore a spiked cod-piece and rode in various motorcycle gangs, became the singer after a year of unsuccessfully trying to learn Space Oddity on guitar!), Magoo, (Chris Exall - guitar), Winston (Winston Blake - bass) and P.J. (Jonathan Birch - drums) were old friends who didn't have much experience playing in bands, and although this didn't stop them, the police almost did. arresting them whilst playing their first gig at Tunbridge Wells Common!
By the autumn
of 1981 the Anti-Nowhere League had secured a deal with WXYZ
Records and were touring to support the Damned.
Their
first single, released in January 1982, was a cover of Sad
Buskers' Streets of London.
However, it was the single's
b-side, So What, that was to really attract attention with
its nasty lyrics about drugs, bestiality, VD, etc. Police
raided their record label, WXYZ records' office, on Feb 12
1982 and seized 10,000 copies of the single. So What's
success was highlighted again when Metallica covered the
song, and then in 1992, asked Animal to sing the track with
them live on stage at Wembley Stadium.
In late 1983, the
band recorded their Live in Yugoslavia LP (under Tito's
reign) before breaking up and then reforming a number of
times, as various album release dates on their Record
Discovery below show.
This November 06, Anti Nowhere
League will, for the first time ever, play three shows in
New Zealand as part of their Kings & Queens World
tour.
