Reality Show For Surfers Hits The South Island

Reality Show For Surfers Hits The South Island Waves

Taranaki surfing twins Te Kauhoe and Wharehoka Wano take to the road again and hit the South Island waves for the second series of TE HIKOI MAHANGA premiering on Maori Television on Monday October 9 at 8.00 PM.

After spending the last series hassling North Island waxheads, the cheeky duo kick-start the reality show for surfers with their annual pilgrimage to the national Maori surf championships in Raglan. But when Wharehoka injures his shoulder in a collision with his brother, the middle-aged mahanga (twins) turn their attention to the cold waters and hardy locals of the mainland.

After Te Kauhoe’s surprise result in the masters at the Maori championships, South Island surfer Danny Carse’s stories about the waves motivates the pair to head to Te Waipounamu (South Island) via Wellington. The adventures begin as they catch up with surfers and local identities in spots as diverse as Christchurch and the Catlins, Invercargill and Greymouth.

They surf with Fran Kora – one of the brothers from Aotearoa’s hottest band, Kora ¬– and share kutai with famous poet Hone Tuwhare. Plus they get to take Ngai Tahu chief executive Tahu Potiki out surfing in Christchurch and harass New Zealand Maori centre Neil Brew about leaving his beloved Taranaki rugby team to play for Otago. Former Tall Black and television personality Brendon Pongia also joins the brothers for some one-on-one basketball.

Te Kauhoe is a freelance broadcaster with experience in both Maori and mainstream media. Among his credits include a role as presenter, reporter and director with the documentary series Waka Huia and freelance work for TV3 News, Mana Magazine, Radio Waatea and AKA Productions. He is currently producing Maori Television’s popular sports entertainment show CODE.
