NZ Sportclimbing Federation Approves Basecamp Wanaka to Host Oceania Championships
New Zealand Sportclimbing Federation has today approved BaseCamp Wanaka to host Australasia’s most prestigious climbing competition, the Oceania Sportclimbing Championships, on October 6-8.
As part of a routine inspection prior to a competition, NZSF president James Maguire and committee member John Targett visited the facility, which is currently under construction. Both men met with contractors, BaseCamp staff and Wanaka Sportclimbing Inc members.
“We have approved the plans for the competition to take place at BaseCamp, and we are confident that Wanaka will put on a great event,” Maguire said.
Targett said he was very impressed with what the facility had to offer: “The building is iconic. It’s the most exciting new development in indoor climbing in New Zealand.”
While parts of the building will not be complete by the time of competition, such as the micro-brewery, offices and conference rooms, the climbing facilities will be of an international standard, BaseCamp director Toby Johnston said.
“We are excited about hosting the crème of New Zealand’s sport climbers and seeing them compete against their international peers.”
The event, which is free for spectators to watch, will feature more than 120 climbers from throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. All are competing for a coveted place in the World Championships and access to invitational events around the world. The New Zealand Junior and National Championships will also take place over the weekend, ensuring an action-packed three-days.
