Race Relations 'Bouquet' for Triangle Television

Triangle Television's contributions to race relations and its launch of Triangle Television Wellington, is being singled out for praise this month by Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres, of the Human Rights Commission.

The Commissioner awards monthly certificates of acknowledgment to individuals and groups who have made a positive contribution to race relations.

"We like to recognise a wide variety of achievement and contributions to diversity in New Zealand," says Mr de Bres. "Triangle Television is an important means of giving voice to a variety of communities on their own terms. It provides access that is otherwise conditional on other people's editorial decisions. Some of the programmes I have seen on Triangle Television are ones that would not have the same level of access for screening on other mainstream television channels."

The Commissioner's endorsement of Triangle Television's work representing a wide range of cultures will be widely publicised in the Human Rights Commission's monthly e-newsletter On the Bright Side, Positive Contributions to Race Relations, with the following commentary:

"FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THEIR AUCKLAND CHANNEL, TRIANGLE TELEVISION BEGAN BROADCASTING IN WELLINGTON ON AUGUST 25. THE STATION AIMS TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON, AND ENCOURAGES WELLINGTONIANS TO TELL THEIR STORIES BY SCREENING THEIR OWN PROGRAMMES.

Triangle Television Chief Executive Officer Jim Blackman says the Commissioner's acknowledgement is a wonderful compliment to the diverse audiences and programme makers who have contributed to the success of Triangle Television Auckland over the past eight years as well as an endorsement of the new Wellington station's programme line-up.

ABOUT TRIANGLE TELEVISION

Triangle Television, which is non-profit making and broadcasts 24 hours daily, screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes.

Triangle Television Auckland has operated as a public broadcaster to greater Auckland since August 1, 1998 and is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station. The station broadcasts from UHF channel 41 and, in Remuera & surrounding suburbs, from UHF channel 52. From UHF channel 42, Triangle Television also reaches the North Shore, Whangaparaoa, Freemans Bay, parts of Mission Bay, St Heliers and Kohimaramara, and parts of the Coromandel.

Triangle Television Wellington broadcasts in the greater Wellington region plus some parts of Marlborough and Blenheim. The main mast for Triangle Television Wellington is at Kaukau on UHF channel 40, with other transmission points at Fitzherbert (UHF channel 41) and Baxter's Knob (UHF channel 41).
