Tsunami documentary to open DOCNZ 2006

Tsunami documentary to open DOCNZ 2006

The boxing day Tsunami shocked and frightened people all around the globe. Here in New Zealand, Mary Taylor was prompted into action.

Taylor runs a food and tea tour business, and has long had a love for Sri Lanka, it’s people, culture and it’s food. Like many of us, she wondered what she could do to help. Unlike most of us, she formulated a plan of action and began a mission that would take her into the lives and homes of New Zealanders as she raised awareness and funds for some of those most affected by the Tsunami.

Turning the Tide is a documentary that examines Taylor’s journey not just to raise the funds, but as she travels to Sri Lanka to ensure the money reaches the people it is intended for. In light of recent stories over the misappropriation of monies by charitable organizations, this uplifting story also satisfies curiosity about what happens to those donations.

Taylor sets up ‘Project Oru 100’ with the aim of replacing 100 outrigger boats (orus) for the south coast fishermen. Then we see her visit those fishing villages, before traveling as far east as the current political unrest allows, to find out how the survivors are really coping one year later.

Taylor finds there are thousands of people still challenged by the aftermath of the tsunami, but learns that out of adversity comes fresh opportunities for some of those hardest hit by the disaster. Turning the Tide will provoke the most cynical into considering how even small change can make a material difference to those who need it most and that the tenacity and determination of one individual can change for the better the lives of many others.
