Wellington Zoo to receive Rotary Club of Wellington’s 20,000th tree

The Rotary Club of Wellington will be planting its 20,000th tree this Saturday at Wellington Zoo, RCW President Denis Kirkcaldie confirmed today.

‘The Rotary Club of Wellington first placed trees into the community in the late 1960s when they commissioned the City Council’s Parks and Reserves Department to plant the first trees on the central strip in Lambton Quay, and have planted trees throughout Wellington annually since then,’

‘Sir Roy McKenzie was President of the Rotary Club of Wellington when the first trees were planted in Lambton Quay; and he will be at the Zoo this Saturday with other Rotary members making sure the 20,000th tree is well and securely planted,’ Mr Kirkcaldie said.

‘Wellington City Council’s Parks and Gardens unit has donated 700 hardy natives for the planting and we are expecting up to 50 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Wellington, who will be joined by senior students from Scots College and Queen Margaret College.’

‘It is fantastic that the Rotary Club of Wellington has chosen the Zoo to be the latest site for its community planting programme,’ Wellington Zoo Acting CEO Mauritz Basson said.

‘The new trees are a great way for us to commemorate our 100th birthday and will help make the Zoo look even better for when centenary celebrations start in October.’

The Rotary Club of Wellington’s tree planting at Wellington Zoo will commence at 2pm on Saturday August 26th.
