New Zealand Team Named for Triathlon World Champs

NEW ZEALAND TEAM NAMED FOR TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPS

Triathlon New Zealand has today announced the team to compete at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland next month.

Terrenzo Bozzone, Hamish Carter, Bevan Docherty, Clark Ellice, Kris Gemmell and Shane Reed will all compete in the men’s elite race on 2 and 3 September. Sam Walker has been selected as a non-travelling reserve.

Competing in the elite women’s race are Carmel Hanly, Andrea Hewitt, Taryn McLeod, Debbie Tanner, Samantha Warriner and Evelyn Williamson, and with Jenny Cooper as a non-travelling reserve.

118 New Zealand athletes will also compete in age group categories at the event.
Triathlon New Zealand High Performance Director, Stephen Farrell, said the New Zealand team was selected due to their success in the 15 ITU World Cup races held since the last World Championships which took place in Gamagori, Japan in September 2005.

“There are a total of 15 ITU World Cup races held throughout the year at which athletes can earn points to gain entry to the World Championships,” he said.
“The last of these was held yesterday (13 August) in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary. New Zealand competitor Debbie Tanner finished in sixth position in that event with a time of 1:56:54, just 1 min 13 seconds behind the winner Joelle Franzmann of Germany.”

Farrell said at the World Championships the kiwi contingent will vie against hundreds of the world’s top triathletes for a top spot in triathlons biggest event of the year.

“With the recent success of many team members we’re certainly in the running for some top positions this year.”

Those successes included Samantha Warriner’s win at the Salford World Cup race on Sunday 30 July, with Andrea Hewitt finishing third in the same event. Kris Gemmell also won the Corner Brook World Cup race a week prior (23 July) and Hamish Carter took out the Edmonton triathlon on 9 July.

“Our triathletes have won three World Cup races recently. Overall, we have had nine triathletes finish in the top three spots in World Cup races this year,” he said.

“Hamish Carter came in fourth last year and is in top form for this year’s, event having spent three months living and training at altitude.

“We’re looking forward to seeing some great performances from our team this year”
