Milk and Honey Concert on COAST Next Week
Funky music show COAST presents a special showcase this Thursday night of performances from the recent ‘Milk and Honey’ event in Auckland (Thursday August 10 on Maori Television at 9.30 PM).
The concert featured performances from Tigilau Ness (above left), Op Shop (above centre), Whirimako Black (above right) and the Putahi Rangatahi Kapa Haka group.
Opshop are a four-piece rock act formed in Christchurch and now based in Auckland. Their debut record ‘You Are Here’ was released in 2004 and went on to achieve platinum status. Six tracks from the album made the Top 10 of the NZ rock radio charts, three of them hitting the Top 5. Opshop are busy preparing for recording their next album. Opshop closed the Milk and Honey concert with a blistering live set of new tracks set to appear on their upcoming sophomore album.
Whirimako Black's distinctive sound blends Maori lyrics with traditional Maori musical forms. Whirimako is about to release her third solo album, Soul Sessions following on the success of her first two albums, Tangihaku and Kurahuna. Her latest album features 11 evergreen classics, such as Stormy Weather, Cry Me A River, and What A Difference A Day Makes. Whirimako and her band performed three songs at the Milk and Honey concert, including He Raumati (Summertime) and Hōria (Georgia).
Tigilau Ness is the front man for roots reggae group Unity Pacific, Tigilau Ness is also the father of hip-hop artist Che Fu. Tigilau’s Rastafarian faith and background in political activism added another dimension to the Milk and Honey concert where he chose to perform a cover version of Bob Marley’s track “War”.
