PULSEing
Eleven years on from their #1 album of the
same name, and a week after the death of their original
singer Syd Barrett, the now three-piece Pink Floyd claim
their first #1 DVD in New Zealand with the pictures (and
extras) to that #1 album, P.U.L.S.E.
And this is a big
seller! It outsells all other DVD titles put together by
four to one, going five times platinum in a single
week.
Pink Floyd formed in England in 1965 when Roger
Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason met at London’s Regent
St Polytechnic and were joined by Syd Barrett, who named
them Pink Floyd after bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd
Council. Most of their early material was written by
Barrett who sadly passed away last week aged 60. He left
the band in 1968, replaced by David Gilmour.
Creative
differences and legal battles ultimately saw the group
become a trio of Gilmour, Wright and Mason, which is the
line-up that recorded their 14-night residency at Earls
Court to yield the double live CD P.U.L.S.E. and the now #1
DVD.
The band has had one #1 single here, Another Brick
In The Wall Part 2, back in January 1980, but they’ve had
seven #1 albums…
Animals (1977),
The Wall
(1979),
The Final Cut (1983),
A Momentary Lapse Of
Reason (1987),
Dark Side Of The Moon (1993),
The
Division Bell (1994), and
P.U.L.S.E. (1995).
And, of
course, David Gilmour had a #2 album, On An Island, earlier
this year.
PCD Set New Mark
New Zealand’s
501st #1 single is here and it’s a record for The Pussycat
Dolls.
It’s goodbye to Gnarls as Crazy drops to #2
following seven straight weeks at #1 (though it is still the
most played song on the radio, holding at #1 on the
RadioScope100).
The Dolls, meanwhile, become the most
successful new act in local chart history as they score
their fourth #1 with their fourth ever single - all lifted
from their former #1 debut set PCD (#4 this week).
The
track that gives them the record is Buttons, a collaboration
with Snoop Dogg, which jumps 31 places to the top. It gives
Snoop his second #1 as well, the first being Drop It Like
It’s Hot back in December 2004.
In total the Dolls have
spent 12 weeks at #1 since Don’t Cha opened their chart
career at #1 nearly 11 months ago. Throw in Stickwitu and
Beep and that gives the PCDs the record.
It also sees the
Pussycat Dolls draw level with Boyz II Men, Christina
Aguilera and Black Eyed Peas at sixth equal on the list of
acts with the most #1s on the Official NZ Music Chart, each
with four apiece.
The only acts with more #1s are
Madonna, UB40, Mariah Carey, U2 and Michael Jackson.
Nelly’s First
Portuguese Canadian Nelly Furtado
scores her first New Zealand #1 album with her third release
Loose, entering the list straight in at #1 in a close-fought
battle with local brothers Evermore, who start at #2 this
week.
The album follows last week’s single entry by
lead single Promiscuous, which climbs to #29 ahead of a
retail release this week, and moves up to #4 on the
RadioScope100.
Nelly’s second single Turn Off The
Lights, from her debut album Whoa Nelly, was a #1 single for
a couple of weeks at the end of August 2001.
Evermore Homes In
2006 is a very good year for Fielding’s
finest. The Hume brothers (Jon, Dann and Peter) have a great
opening week for their sophomore album on both sides of the
Tasman.
Real Life is a shade short of being New
Zealand’s #1 album this week, making a creditable #2 entry
here and heads into the Aussie chart at #5. Lead single
Running has hit #5 on both sides of the ditch as well.
(Currently it’s #9 here and #11 there, and is the second
most-played song on the radio here this week).
The lads
head home for a lightning three-date tour next week to
celebrate the album’s launch. On Tuesday they’re in
Auckland, Thursday in Wellington and Friday in
Christchurch.
If you can’t make the shows, the Auckland
gig will be streamed live on Vodafone Live! No word on
Palmy or Fielding dates though.
Anna’s Year-Long Wait
Twenty-one-year-old Californian singer /
songwriter Anna Nalick’s debut album and single were
released just under a year ago, in August last year. But
this week both make a belated chart debut, the album Wreck
Of The Day new at #38 and single Breathe (2am) new at
#39.
So why the long gap? In this case, a long slow
climb on the back of radio airplay - Breathe (2am) has been
an easy listening radio staple for the past 10 months and
that has built to see the track at #8 on the RadioScope100
after 23 weeks on the chart.
The New Single
#16
Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind
From the fashion pages to
the chart, Paris Hilton lands her first New Zealand hit with
her first single Stars Are Blind which takes highest new
entry honours at #16 this week.
#28 Zero T -
Cruizin’
Formed in Gisborne three years ago, Zero T
comprises four male vocalists and one female vocalist who
place their debut single straight into the chart at #28, a
first taste of their debut album Second To None which drops
soon. They’re helped out on the track by Nesian
Mystik’s Feleti Strickson-Pua.

#12 Thom Yorke - The
Eraser
Radiohead mainman Thom Yorke’s solo debut
release is fresh in at #12. Radiohead’s last charting
album was 2003’s Hail To The Thief, and there is a new
album rumoured for later in the year.
#17 Greg Johnson -
Anyone Can Say Goodbye
Fourteen years ago, the now
LA-based Kiwi singer-songwriter Greg Johnson landed his
first charting album, Everyday Distortions, which peaked at
#25. This week he racks up his seventh charting release
with Anyone Can Say Goodbye, following up 2004’s Here
Comes The Caviar. The set’s lead single, Now The Sun Is
Out, is currently #24 on the RadioScope100, his biggest hit
single to date being 1992’s #7 Isabelle.
#37 Underoath -
Define The Great Line
American band Underoath claim their
first New Zealand chart appearance with their third album,
new at #37 this week. The release peaked a couple of weeks
back at #2 in their native US. The band, led by singer
Spencer Chamberlain and drummer Aaron Gillespie, have had
two previous albums, The Changing Times and They’re Only
Chasing Safety.
#38 Anna Nalick - Wreck Of The Day
