Tiger Translate 06 brings the best of Asia to Auckland

Tiger Translate 06 reinterprets the best of contemporary Asia in downtown Auckland for one sensational night of interactive art, music and technology.

Renowned New York-based artist Rostarr will collaborate with leading New Zealand design practice The Wilderness to create a mind-blowing, full-sensory experience at the Britomart Pavilion on Friday 21st July.

With a theme of ‘Show Me Your Asia’, the team will transform the Pavilion, combining visual arts, design, theatre, music, food and drink to produce an unforgettable event unlike anything seen before.

Tiger ™ Beer brand manager Winston Seow says, “Tiger Translate 06 is inspired by the ancient Chinese proverb: ‘Tell them and they will forget, show them and they will remember, involve them and they will understand.’

“Tiger Translate 06 is more than just a wicked party and awe-inspiring exhibition – it is a multi-sensory experience that aims to break down the barriers between artist and viewer, and actually involve people in the creative act.”

Kelvin Soh, award-winning director of The Wilderness, says, “Our vision for Translate 06 surrounds three key factors – technology, experiential and kinetic.”

“We’ve sourced a series of cutting-edge technologies that will be woven into the interactive experience. By dissolving the ‘wall’ between performer and audience, we then have the potential for hundreds of performances and artworks – and a truly awesome event.”

Korean-born Rostarr has won huge international acclaim for his cutting-edge graphics that fuse digital design and free painting. The urban artist and graphic designer will be visiting New Zealand for the first time to take part in Tiger Translate 06.

Kelvin Soh says, “Rostarr really is an urban legend – he’s constantly pushing boundaries and challenging beliefs in contemporary art and culture. We’re blown away to be working with him.”

“Our collaboration with Rostarr will consist of site specific sculptures and objects, which will be personalised with artwork by both parties. We will create architecturally inspired 'frameworks' which will house Rostarr's visual responses. Also on show will be video transmission of live painting by Rostarr.”

Rostarr and The Wilderness will be joined by Tokyo-based Kiwi artist Karl Willis and his Light Tracer drawing machine. Light Tracer uses motion detector software to allow users to create artworks with any available light sources such as a light pen or mobile phone. The simple technology means anyone can interact with the technology and create their own work of art.

The Auckland event will also feature a stellar line-up of local and international musicians (to be announced shortly), who will collaborate both with each other and with the art itself, creating a uniquely immersive experience.

Winston Seow says, “Tiger Translate perfectly encapsulates the Tiger brand – our Asian heritage and long-time local and international involvement with the visual arts. It is Tiger’s desire to be always breaking new ground and challenging beliefs.”

Tiger Translate 06 will be the second Translate event held in Auckland. The first was at the Transmission Room in 2005, and was such a success that the event has now been taken worldwide. Seoul, Dubai, Dublin, Shanghai and Copenhagen are just some of the cities hosting Tiger Translate 06.
