Fly My Pretties first
entered people’s hearts and minds in 2004, with the idea
from The Black Seeds’ front-man Barnaby Weir and Loop’s
Mikee Tucker, to assemble an exciting group of musicians for
a theatre-based live show and recording. The result: the
platinum-selling album ‘Fly My Pretties: Live at Bats’
(LP024), winning Best Pop Album at the NZ Music b-net Awards
2005.
Building on it, last year’s The Return of Fly My Pretties saw key members of the original cast reunite, and meet with new faces from the Wellington music scene. With the repertoire encompassing a diverse range of styles from folk-roots, to reggae, rock, new-soul, and blues; the themes repeatedly reflected the state of contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand: A nation isolated in the pacific searching for its identity.
“I was dumbstruck, in awe and, ultimately, moved. It was that damn good.” Real Groove Magazine
To represent this, The Return of Fly My Pretties had a nostalgic ‘vaudevillian’ aesthetic, complete with 1930’s working-class influenced costumes. To support the performance, a visual backdrop was lovingly crafted by some of New Zealand’s finest video-jockies, gathered together by the clever people at Nektar Films. Incorporating rare and restored film footage, supplied by The New Zealand Film Archive, and live action captured on stage, the visual backdrop was mixed live to great effect. This work can now be seen on the platinum selling DVD live record.
Barnaby Weir, front man of The Black Seeds, took the role as the creative leader of Fly Pretties, leading a flock of stunning musicians including The Phoenix Foundation’s Sam Scott, Age Pryor, Tessa Rain and rising star Hollie Smith, who collaborated previously with some of the countries top acts including Fat Freddy’s Drop, and recently disbanded TrinityRoots.
Up and coming artists included Seven Suns lead singer Adi Dick, Dan Weetman of The Black Seeds, Paselode’s Nato, Jeramiah Ross (aka Module) and much talked about Charlie ASH bassist Mailee Mathews. The cast was rounded off by Flying Nun sweetheart Brendan Moran, with The Black Seeds’ dream team Mike Fabulous on bass and Jarney Murphey on drums, who are being touted as one of the best rhythm sections in the country.
“A compilation of talent and songs that sets new standards for local shows.” Metro Magazine
The new nationwide tour of Fly My
Pretties sees the talents of Luke Buda (The Phoenix
Foundation) and Ryan Prebble added, to create something
altogether unique and special. Luke Buda replaces Samuel
Flynn Scott. The audience will get the chance to relive the
magic of last year’s performances - and to witness the
evolution of Fly My Pretties.
