Mullet Brothers Save the World... Again

The Improvisors present SFN in
Mullet Brothers Save the World…Again

“The mullet brothers…” is a show which unleashes creative chaos on the Wellington stage in a way that it has never been before. Its a show that combines the steady hand at the tiller of The Improvisors with the wild, rock ‘n’ roll stylings of Greg Ellis and Steve Wrigley (aka SFN).

Its improvised comedy at its most extreme. And it solves the world’s major problems.

The show centers on Terry and Darren Mullet, two simple men from Taita who accidentally solve one of the world’s major problems every night. They can do this because they are idiot Savants – unwise in the ways of the world but a genius in one particular field.

And did we mention the fact that they’re Bogans?! Be it aids, cancer, the Middle East, global warming – whatever – these 2 brothers manage to blunder their way to a solution that has eluded the world’s great and good up to now. It’s an improvised buddy movie where 2 men attempt to bring you a cast of thousands. And it’s a show that puts the idiot back into idiot savant. We’d love to tell you more about it but we can’t – the rest is up to the audience.

“The Mullet Brothers…” has a very fluid relationship with the audience. The performers can stop or freeze the action at any time and step out of the play to get more information for the story or just chat for a moment while they get their bearings. There are very few rules and almost no limits. Within the confines of a black box set 2 highly experienced improvisers will attempt to bring to life crowds of thousands, sweltering deserts or even mitochondrial DNA. It’s a show where the audience really gets to see the performers making it all up as they go along.

The Improvisors are Wellington’s original and most experienced improvisation company. In addition they have also created many different long format improvisation shows, from improvised Shakespeare to soap operas that have featured in every one of the comedy festivals run in Wellington. Both are members of the Improvisors with a combined total of 25 years improvisation experience. In 2004 S.F.N began appearing at indigo’s comedy evenings performing their unique brand of improv which is looser, wilder and less predictable than the improv you’d see elsewhere. S.F.N throws Justin Timberlake together with fruit puppetry and snuff movies into the improv blender and hopes nothing leaves a stain.

In his own right Greg Ellis is one of the artistic directors of the Improvisors and has also created ‘geezers’ and ‘rock on’ (long format improv shows for the court theatre). In 2006 Greg will represent New Zealand in the world Theatresports championships.
Steve Wrigley is currently working his way around North America and appearing at stand-up comedy nights and improv gigs. For this show Steve and Greg have persuaded Steve Gallagher, Chapman Tripp winning musician and sound designer, to throw his weight in behind the show.
