This Weeks NZ Music Month Highlights

It is Monday 15th May - Day #15 of NZ Music Month 2006.

Tomorrow night The Bleeders, Deja Voodoo and Cherry’s Gemstones are performing live in your living room. C4 came down to Wellington to party it up and film the gig that launched over 600 others this month. Join Jane Yee and Clarke Gayford for NZ Music Month’s Biggest All Ages Gig, tomorrow night 8.00pm on C4.

Don McGlashan has become a household name in New Zealand music through his involvement with Blam Blam Blam, The Front Lawn and The Mutton Birds; and today he has released his first solo album Warm Hand through Arch Hill Recordings. Tomorrow another kiwi artist is busting out his first solo effort. Samuel Flynn Scott from The Phoenix Foundation is releasing his debut solo album The Hunt Brings Us Life through Loop Recordings. Two good reasons to visit your local record store this NZ Music Month.

This week Palmerston North is enjoying its own music festival, SwampFest. Now in its third year, SwampFest 06 has become a weeklong celebration of original music in Palmerston North. Named for the city’s origins as a primordial swamp, the title belies the diversity and quality of music on offer. SwampFest 06 brings together Punk, Ska, Hip Hop, Metal, Pop and Emo a reflection on the breadth of the Palmerston North music scene. Workshops, seminars, All Ages Shows and even some free ones. Maori TV’s Coast has been going hard all month. This week on the show there are live performances from Michael Pipes, Recliner, Cydel and the Groovehouse, and Samuel Flynn Scott from the Phoenix Foundation drops in to chat about his solo album. There are also CDs to giveaway – Chong Nee, Aaradhna and Katchafire remixes. Check it out Thursday 9.30PM on Maori TV or Sunday 11AM on C4.

This Saturday night Cold By Winter, The Rabble, The Managers, My Life Story and Tomorrow Comes in Silence are putting on a NZ Music Month Special for the kids. It is only $10 and happening at Grey Lynn Library Hall, 474 Great North Rd, Grey Lynn, Auckland.

And those crazy A Low Hum cats are out and about again with Disasteradio, Kill Surf City and Voom bouncing up and down the country. This Saturday check them out at an All Ages matinee show, followed by an R18 show at Arc Café, Dunedin.

Greymouth has pronounced this Saturday Blackwash of Greymouth. As well as the Music Industry Forum there will be bands in a whole bunch of pubs and duos in cafes. You can get a card stamped at each venue and can win prizes.

To wrap up the week head off this Sunday to the Band of Strangers concert. Some of Auckland’s top secondary school students have been selected to perform with Yulia, Steriogram, Deceptikonz, and The Exponents. Check it out on the 21st of May at the Auckland Town Hall 6pm. Tickets available through Ticketek.
